"I have now become death, the destroyer of worlds."
~Julius Robert Oppenheimer
Perhaps it seems like an exaggeration to one who concludes too early that they understand artificial intelligence. One can for instance look at the nation-state attacks of cyber bombs pummeled in Ukraine on June 27, 2017, knocking out electronic communications across a thirty mile radius making a situation similar to that of Stone Age with no electricity, telephones, gas lines, water systems and internet.
The delegates in the committee, who will be representing the portfolios of powerful leaders from the technological as well as governmental world, are expected to discuss and prevent such harmful implications of AI possible while fostering the advantages that can be yielded equally.
The current scenario demands urgent action, surpassing even the perils of nuclear warfare, where major stakes were not in the hands of private entities. In today's landscape, data has become as essential as the air we breathe. However, a lack of consensus on issues such as cybersecurity, surveillance, privacy, public safety in cyberwar, and the moral dilemmas posed by artificial intelligence, including facial recognition and voice cloning, underscores the need for a thorough discussion on their implications for
international security, which will form the primary goal of debate in the committee for the delegates.
Neither the tech sector nor the government can single-handedly address these challenges. A balanced approach involving a combination of self-regulation and government intervention is imperative. The United Nations Secretary-General has convened the Secretary General’s High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation to put forth proposals and enhance cooperation in a space where collaborative efforts among governments, the private sector, civil society, international organizations, and technical and
academic communities are crucial.
